This book in the first in a series that revolves around the lives and romances of the privileged teenagers at the Constance Billard School for Girls, an elite private school in New York City's Upper East Side. The books primarily focus on the best friends, Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen, whose lives are chronicled by the gossip blogger, Gossip Girl. There are thirteen novels in the series, the first of which became the inspiration for the drama TV series.

The book series has been challenged due to its sexual content. Many have questioned whether or not this series is appropriate for a teen audience.
