I Know why the Caged Bird Sings
Subject
Autobiography
Description
In this coming of age story, which is the first in a seven volume series, Maya recounts her early childhood through to when she became a mother at the age of 17. She recounts her rape at age 8, and explores how a love of literature and character strength can help one overcome racism and trauma.
Angelou utilizes thematic development and other literary techniques that are common to fiction, bringing some critics to refer to the book as ‘autobiographical fiction’.
Many have objected to the book's depictions of lesbianism, premarital cohabitation, pornography, and violence. Some have been critical of its sexually explicit scenes, use of language, and irreverent religious depictions. It also has been challenged for being “anti-white and encouraging homosexuality.” The book has had thirty-nine public challenges or bans since 1983.
