"This first zine introduces readers to the Canadian practice of forcing Indigenous children to leave their families and live in government and church run “Industrial Schools”
Touted as being for their benefit, the Indian Residential School System was wrought with physical & sexual abuse, malnutrition, depression, illness, torture and for many children, death.
The aim of these schools was to break the spirit and cultural connections of Indigenous children to their way of life, and assimilate them into the world of the “white man.”
Many Canadians feel this is ancient history but this zine lays the foundation for every rebuttal to people who think we should all be over it by now.
With the current state of the world it’s more important now to remember the mistakes of those before us to ensure we never go back. Learning true history will help us all remain empathetic, loving, informed and understanding individuals. If those with power wish to ignore history (and current problems, let's be honest) then we need to get feisty and educate ourselves and others, right?
To be honest, this is a difficult read as the lived experiences of survivors are heartbreaking but they are essential to hear.
The zine concludes with questions for you to ask yourself, “what is really needed for Reconciliation and is it even possible with the state of things?”"
