Title

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Subject

Young Adult Fiction

Description

This book follows an introverted, high school freshman, Charlie, who befriends two seniors, Patrick and Sam, and starts to experiment with alcohol, drugs, and smoking. As he manages his new social life and his feelings towards Sam, Patrick's step-sister, Charlie is still faced with flashbacks to two traumatic experiences, one, the suicide of his only middle school friend, Michael, and two, the death of his Aunt Helen, who, as it comes out later in the book, sexually abused him when he was young. The end of the book sees Charlie coming to terms with his past and decides to participate more in life.

Though this book has been enjoyed by teens and adults alike, ALA cites it as one of the most challenged titles in the past decade. It has been challenged due to its subjects of teen sexuality and substance abuse, and has been banned several times in school districts in the US.
